Build Your Concept Muscle
Do not wait for one perfect idea. Generate enough ideas to recognize when one has unusual energy.
The principle
Concept creation is a practice, not a lightning strike. Make lists. Combine incompatible elements. Follow strange questions without demanding that each answer become a screenplay. Most ideas will be ordinary, incomplete, or useless. Good. Volume lowers the stakes of any single attempt and teaches your brain to keep producing possibilities.
Put it to work
- Write twenty premises quickly without evaluating them until the list is finished.
- For the five with energy, identify the protagonist, pressure, recurring engine, and cost of failure.
- Return after a week and notice which ideas kept generating scenes without being forced.
Common mistakes
- Spending months defending the first idea that arrived.
- Mistaking a setting, subject, or twist for a story engine.
- Rejecting playful ideas before discovering what they could become.
