Finding an Idea That Can Carry a Movie
A promising idea contains a source of sustained pressure, not merely a setting, topic, or twist.
The principle
A movie idea becomes usable when it suggests a person, a destabilizing problem, consequential choices, and enough change to keep generating scenes. “A haunted hotel” is a territory. Who must enter, why they cannot leave, what the haunting forces them to do, and what failure costs begin to create a story engine.
Put it to work
- Ask who is least equipped to face this problem and why they cannot reasonably walk away.
- List ten distinct pressures or complications the premise naturally produces.
- Test whether the ending can arise from the protagonist’s choices rather than a late explanation.
Common mistakes
- Confusing research interest with dramatic movement.
- Protecting one twist at the expense of the preceding movie.
- Choosing scale before finding the human conflict.
