Only reading excellent work can hide the decisions underneath it. A weaker screenplay lets you feel repetition, generic dialogue, missing setups, muddy geography, and scenes that outstay their purpose. The exercise is not to sneer at another writer. It is to identify the exact moment your attention changes and carry that awareness back to your own pages.
Put it to work
- Read one acclaimed script and one unproduced or early draft with the same analytical questions.
- Mark where you became confused, predicted the next beat, or started skimming.
- For every criticism, write one specific revision that might address the underlying problem.
Common mistakes
- Treating taste as diagnosis.
- Assuming a produced script is automatically a useful model in every respect.
- Learning only what to avoid without identifying what the script does well.
