The principle
An option generally grants an exclusive right for a defined period to acquire specified rights under stated terms. A shopping agreement usually authorizes efforts to attach buyers, financing, or talent without itself purchasing the property. Chain of title is the documented path showing control of underlying rights. Details matter more than labels.
Put it to work
- Confirm parties, rights granted, term, extension, payment, exclusivity, approval, credit, and reversion.
- Disclose underlying material and collaborators accurately.

Common mistakes
