The principle
Starting at page one and marching forward can make every new idea carry the weight of everything before it. That is not discipline. It is one method, and sometimes it is the method keeping you stuck. Jump to the ending. Write the scene you can already see. Work backward from a consequence. Once several islands exist, the missing bridges become easier to recognize.
Put it to work
- Describe the ending before you know every step that reaches it.
- Draft three scenes you are excited to write, even if their order may change.
- For each scene island, ask what must become true immediately before it and what becomes unavoidable after it.
Common mistakes
- Waiting for act one to be perfect before imagining act three.
- Assuming an out-of-order process creates an incoherent final script.
- Polishing disconnected scenes instead of eventually testing the causal chain.
