The principle
A beat is a meaningful unit of action or tactic. A reversal changes the apparent direction, advantage, or understanding. Escalation increases pressure, cost, exposure, or commitment. None require constant shouting; a quiet disclosure can reverse a room more forcefully than a fight.
Put it to work
- Mark each change in tactic and remove repetitions that produce the same response.
- Give the scene at least one development that neither participant can ignore.
- Escalate toward the story’s values, not merely volume.
Common mistakes
- Calling every line a beat until the term means nothing.
- Adding arbitrary interruptions.
- Reversing twice back to the original state with no residue.
