The principle

A pass is a deliberate read focused on one system: causality, protagonist agency, supporting characters, setup/payoff, exposition, dialogue, action prose, or continuity. Changes will overlap, but a stated lens prevents the rewrite from becoming random tinkering.

Put it to work

  • Begin with premise, structure, and character decisions that can invalidate later polish.
  • Track setups and payoffs in pairs; remove orphaned promises and seed earned outcomes.
  • Finish with read-aloud dialogue, continuity, spelling, and PDF proofing passes.

Common mistakes

  • Doing ten simultaneous passes on every page.
  • Keeping deleted scenes alive through stray references.
  • Calling cosmetic changes a new draft.
