The principle
A necessary scene alters the situation: somebody learns, decides, wins, loses, commits, conceals, or changes the balance of power. It may perform several jobs, but information alone is rarely enough. If the next scene plays identically without it, the scene is probably redundant or unfinished.
Put it to work
- Write the state at entry and exit. Name the change in one sentence.
- Identify the character driving the scene and the outcome they are trying to produce.
- Enter near the pressure point and leave once the consequential turn has landed.
Common mistakes
- Starting with greetings and logistics.
- Repeating an emotional beat the audience already understands.
- Keeping a scene because it contains a favorite line rather than a needed change.
